4. What’s the difference between conventional, alternative, homeopathic, holistic, and rehabilitative treatments and therapies? Return to Top
Conventional
Conventional veterinarian treatment refers to what you would normally think of when taking your pet to a vet. It includes annual physical examinations to make sure your pet is healthy and to discover or monitor health concerns. Vaccinations, prescriptions, blood testing, dental work, X-rays, and surgeries are commonly practiced in the field of conventional veterinary medicine.
Alternative
If you prefer a more natural approach for your pet's well-being, alternative, or complementary, veterinarian therapies may be for you.
Alternative therapies are used in conjunction with (or to complement) conventional treatments to help your animal. Alternative veterinarian practice is becoming more popularly accepted as the body of research grows in this field. Alternative methods often take a holistic approach, where the patient’s environment, diet, and health concerns all are taken into consideration. There are many forms of alternative care, including Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture, and vaccine alternatives, to name a few.
Homeopathic
Homeopathic therapy uses specifically prepared and very small doses of natural substances known for curing the same symptoms that they can cause. Homeopathic remedies are chosen to treat your pet’s physical, emotional, and mental system as a whole. Vets certified in providing homeopathic care at Marda Loop Veterinary Centre will work closely with you to determine the effectiveness of treatment.
Holistic
A holistic approach to medicine considers the "whole" picture. Holistic medicine is typically a more natural and less invasive approach. Animal type, age, diet, environment, and specific health concerns are all taken into consideration when using a holistic approach to health care. Prevention is also a main consideration in the holistic field.
Rehabilitation
When your pet is injured or has surgery, rehabilitation therapy can help your pet return to a normal functioning level. This therapy may also be used to manage pain associated with chronic disorders such as arthritis, cruciate injury, and disc disease. Rehabilitation therapy is all about improving function and controlling pain. Massage therapy, ultrasound, therapeutic exercise, chiropractic treatments, and diet are just few common rehabilitative therapies used to get animals back into shape.
5. Do I need to make an appointment? Return to Top
We always ask that you call ahead to make an appointment to see one of our veterinarians. While we will always do our best to fit your pet in, we can't guarantee there will be a vet available to see walk-in patients.
6. How can I tell if my pet is sick and needs to see a vet? Return to Top
Here are some signs that your pet may be in distress:
- Lack of appetite and/or not drinking as much water as normal
- Not as active as normal (lethargic), sleeping, or laying down more than usual
- Diarrhea, constipation, "accidents" in the house, straining to urinate, and other differences in bowel movements from normal
- Bleeding
- Injury
If you notice these symptoms in your animal, you should call our clinic at 403-243-8873. We will do our best to get your pet in to see a vet right away. If no doctors are available at our clinic, we will help you facilitate the proper medical care based on your animal's immediate needs.

9. We live out of town. Are there any alternatives to in-person clinic visits? Return to Top
Yes, there are alternatives to in-person visits, especially for out-of-town patients. In some cases, our vets are able to offer guidance over the phone. You can book 15- to 30-minute phone consultations to discuss your concerns with one of our vets. Please call us to see how we can best help you and your pet.

Prices can vary depending on the size and age of the animal, and whether you want a microchip. Please call and talk to one of our staff members to get a general estimate over the phone.
